چکیده

Among all peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing systems, BitTorrent rises as the most prominent one. A recent analysis [1] shows that although P2P traffic is slightly declining, but BitTorrent traffic is still on the rise. It is responsible for more than 45-78% of all P2P traffic, roughly a quarter of all Internet traffic. This success has drawn a great deal of research interest on the system. In particular, there have been many lines of research studying its scalability, performance, efficiency, and fairness. In this thesis, we attempt to gain insights into the BitTorrent dynamics from a purely experimental and simulation based study. We study how heterogeneity of peer bandwidth plays a role in the overall performance of the system. Further, we investigate the application of BitTorrent protocols to Videoon-Demand systems. With the large growth of multimedia content over the internet and the ever-increasing memory space available at a cheaper cost, Video-on-demand (VoD, also called on-demand video streaming) has become an extremely popular service on the Internet. We propose topology optimization methods to achieve high performance of the networks. We verify these by extensive simulations on our home-built simulator.

A Novel Caching Strategy in Video-on-Demand (VoD) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks Based on Complex Network Theory

The popularity of video-on-demand (VoD) streaming has grown dramatically over the World Wide Web. Most users in VoD P2P networks have to wait a long time in order to access their requesting videos. Therefore, reducing waiting time to access videos is the main challenge for VoD P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for caching video based on peers' priority and video's popula...

BitTorrent-like P2P approaches for VoD: A comparative study

The enormous popularity of Video on Demand (VoD) has attracted substantial research attention into the effective use of peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures to provide solutions at large-scale. In particular, the high efficiency of BitTorrent has inspired many P2P protocols for VoD. However, these protocols use different approaches to adapt the design of Bittorrent to VoD, and in most cases their p...

Turbocharged P2P Video Distribution

Video distribution over the Internet continues to increase its bandwidth consumption, and is a challenging research topic. There are two types of user demands: video downloading and Video on Demand (VoD) streaming. We are the first to analyze the combination of the two different demands and propose a mutual benefit design, which can accelerate video distribution significantly. BitTorrent-like P...

Project Report: On GPU-based Parallel Peer-to-Peer Simulation

Peer-to-peer (P2P) content distribution systems such as file-sharing (e.g. BitTorrent), live streaming (e.g. PPLive) and video-on-demand (e.g. Joost) systems have become enormously popular on today’s Internet. These systems organize tens of thousands or even millioins of participating user hosts into a randomized mesh topology, where each user maintains connection with a subset of other peer us...
